Amsterdam municipality invests in sport facilities

3 April 2023

Amsterdam municipality once again chooses GreenMatter.

The City of Amsterdam is investing 22 million in various sports facilities to meet the growing needs. The investments are planned in all parts of the city. This investment focuses on more exercise and outdoor play, making sports complexes more sustainable and top-class sport. The Bosbaan will also be taken in hand and renovated with sutainable materials.

Bosbaan Amsterdam forest

The Bosbaan in the Amsterdam forrest is a (inter)nationally known rowing course. To meet the applicable rules for international rowing events, the Bosbaan has been widened twice. In 2026, the Bosbaan will host the World Rowing Championships. Before then, the municipality wants to have the Bosbaan in order. Besides rowing, other sports are also practised on the Bosbaan such as; fishing, swimming, canoeing and dragon boating.

GreenMatter deck planks

For this project, we replaced the wood of all starting rafts of the rowing course with recycled artificial grass deck planks. The deck planks were made from recycled artificial grass from worn-out sports fields and by doing so, the municipality of Amstedam is once again actively contributing to reducing artificial grass waste. A total of 6.835 kg of recycled artificial grass was used. The new deck planks have an expected technical lifespan of 50 years and will be 100% recyclable at the end of their lifespan. We have previously recycled almost an entire artificial grass pitch at the Bosbaan in the form of combi dam pile planking. The Bosbaan will soon take a look on how the municipality can do even more to increase sustainability. This could include replacing the honorary raft, the fishing jetties and other jetties. The Amsterdam municipality is taking the lead in directing its waste not only in a circulair, but above all sensible way.
