Sustainable waterfront retaining structure in Amsterdam-North

From sports field to waterfront: circularity in practice

23 April 2026

What happens to a worn-out artificial turf field? In Amsterdam-Noord, it gets a second life.

In a residential area, a sustainable waterfront retaining structure is currently being realized on behalf of Griekspoor. While a different solution was initially specified, close collaboration between the contractor and the Municipality of Amsterdam led to the choice for a circular alternative.

In line with Amsterdam’s ambition for reuse, recycled artificial turf has been selected as the raw material. With support from the Sustainability department, this approach has been made possible.

The impact is tangible: over 2.2 kilometers of retaining structure, made from more than two football fields worth of artificial turf. A project that demonstrates how collaboration leads to circular solutions with visible results.
