From artificial turf waste to a circular park bench

7 May 2026

Old, worn park benches with decayed wood have been fully restored and made more sustainable.

At Recreatiepark Assumburg – Oud Haerlem in Heemskerk, 26 existing park benches have been renovated using planks made from recycled artificial turf. Instead of replacing the complete benches, a conscious decision was made to preserve the existing frames. Only the worn wooden components were renewed.

With this approach, approximately 1,025 kilograms of artificial turf waste has been reused as a raw material for public spaces. The project demonstrates how circular choices do not have to be complicated, but can instead be practical and directly applicable.

Circular principles in practice

The renovation aligns closely with the principles of the R-ladder. By preserving existing components and reusing materials, the value of raw materials is retained for a longer period of time.

Several strategies come together within this project:

  • Refurbish / Repair: existing bench structures are preserved
  • Reuse / Repurpose: artificial turf is given a new application
  • Recycle: waste material is reused as a raw material

This approach reduces the need for new materials while simultaneously extending the lifespan of existing facilities.

Collaboration throughout the chain

The project was carried out on behalf of the Municipality of Heemskerk. The planks were processed by partner VERHEES PRODUCTS and supplied by GreenMatter.

The renovation of the benches shows how collaboration throughout the chain can contribute to concrete circular solutions in public spaces.
